In memory of Steven J Bond, Chairman of Victoria Cricket Club from 2013-2015, member from 1987

Victoria Cricket Club is sad to announce the death of their much loved Chairman, Steven Bond at the young age of 51. Steven died on 25th March 2015 of natural causes that are not yet explained. He had recently been planning the 2015 season for Victoria for whom he served as Chairman and previously as Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and of course Team Captain.

First and foremost, Steven loved playing cricket. In his time at Vics he was often a useful opening batsman and in his prime scored 3 centuries and 13 half centuries. He was a great regular choice for his fielding however, making several great catches per season but he had even been an occasional bowler in his younger days. All round S.J. Bond was a steady hand for any team he was picked for.

Of course Steven was important in representing Victoria with the Western District Cricket Union and with Cricket Scotland. He was instrumental in the negotiations of Bellahouston Park as a shared home ground for the club, and helped to arrange the progression of the club through the leagues by developing the creation of their Junior team.

What pleased Steve the most was the continued success of Victoria CC. Even when not picked to play, he would support the players, maintain the score books, and do a spot of umpiring. Indeed he had very recently passed the first umpiring exam with flying colours and was happy to be able register with the ECB as an umpire!Ultimately Steven Bond was proud of Victoria Cricket Club being able to field 3 first teams, 2 second teams and 1 junior team a week in the West of Scotland. That’s 33 or more men and boys playing sport several times a week in Glasgow because they are a member of Victoria and Steve wanted this to continue until he could retire. The club should honour Steven’s memory by playing as much and as well as they can, by developing their skills of cricket as well as of good sportsmanship, diplomacy, and even of organisation and accountancy. This will be a sad year for Victoria CC, but let’s do our best as Steven would have wanted, and above all else - enjoy playing cricket!
