Sunday, September 11, 2011

The 2011 season came to a damp end today as rain, having already caused the postponement of the planned Greenwood Trophy Finals Day at East Kilbride (waterlogged), also washed out the semi final (Victoria v. Whitehaugh) that was hastily arranged for Springburn Park.

Friday, September 9, 2011

Tomorrow's Strathclyde Shield FINAL against Active Life Club is unlikely now to take place as scheduled.  There is news, however, regarding the still-to-be-completed 2011 Greenwood Trophy.  Weather permitting, the trophy will be contested for this coming Sunday (September 11) at East Kilbride's ground.  Firstly, at 12.30, Victoria will play Whitehaugh in the outstanding semi final followed, after a suitable break, by the FINAL between the winners and Strathclyde.  Let's hope the rain stays away just for one afternoon.

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Today's friendly match v. Bradford was abandoned after just 9 overs with the visitors 39-1.  Once again, in this wet season, it was rain, rain and more rain that had the final word.

Saturday, August 27, 2011

Victoria completed their 2011 Conference season with a defeat at the hands of Marress down in Irvine.  The scores: Marress 183 (Mohammad Asif 5-33), Victoria 151 (Abid Shuja 43).  Despite the defeat Victoria have comfortably won the Tom Kerr Conference.

Victoria's Whiteinch XI registered a convincing victory in an astonishing Roddy MacLeod Conference match today.   Whiteinch, winning the toss, totalled a useful 177-7 with Junaid Zaheer making 36 and captain Mohammad Asif Chaudhry 34.  That was the prelude to an astonishing period of cricket that followed as Gatehouse of Fleet were dismissed, in the 13th over, for just 13.  17 year old Musawer Hussain returned the remarkable figures of 6-5-1-7, with the only run against his bowling being a no-ball!  A strange afternoon of cricket took a final twist as, just as the players left the field at the conclusion of the match, the rain which had been forecast for 5pm arrived right on schedule.  Had the home side resisted just 10 or so minutes longer the match would almost certainly have been abandoned.  Musawer Hussain's bowling return is joint best (with Nasratullah Khan last year v. Kirkstyle) for the Club since 1983.

Sunday, August 14, 2011

Victoria made it 6 wins out of 6 in their Sunday League campaign with a 109 run victory over the Poloc Academy side at Shawholm today.  Victoria were bowled out for 165 in 37 overs, with Shahbaz Hussain making 31 and Wasif Ghafoor 26.  Bhargavan took 3-30.  In reply the Poloc XI were dismissed in just 19.4 overs for 56.  Niamat Ali took 4-15 and Naeem Iqbal 3-23.

ELLON GORDON WIN THE SMALL CLUBS CUP!!!

Victoria failed today in their efforts to retain the Small Clubs Cup as Ellon Gordon, deservedly, took the trophy by virtue of a 6 wicket win at New Anniesland.  Vics' put in, were struggling almost from the start, being 48-5 in the 18th over.  Aamir Azeem, batting at number three, manfully stuck to his task as best he could (despite being struck by a shot by the non-striking batsman and suffering a recurrence of a leg injury which required a runner).  He scored 24 in 106 minutes off 67 balls (3 fours) and shared a stand of 39 with wicket keeper Abid Shuja, who top scored with 29 (5 fours, 1 six).  Opening bowler Scott White took 3-33 and there were two wickets each for Richard Greenfield and Jonathan Barrett.  The eventual total of 133 (37.4 overs) was never likely to be enough....and so it proved.  In Ellon Gordon's reply skipper Stewart Davies (another batsman requiring a runner due to injury) was run out when he and his runner found themselves at the non-striker's end!  That was 21-1 in the 6th over.  The next wicket didn't fall until the score sat at 87, Jonathan Barrett hitting 9 fours in his 39.  Munir Ahmed took 2 wickets when the scores were level but, off the first ball of the next over (the 28th), Aman Arora struck the winning run off Abdul Quddoos.  The opener finished 58 not out (100 minutes, 69 balls, 10 fours) and was named Man of the Match by Jim Young, Immediate Past President of Cricket Scotland, at the after match presentation.

Saturday, July 30, 2011

It was a mixed day today for the two Victoria sides in the WDCU Conferences.  At Ardencaple the Victoria XI recorded a convincing 94 run victory over their hosts.  Victoria were dismissed for 186, with wicket keeper Abid Shuja top scoring with 79.  Ardencaple were then bowled out for just 92.  Muhammad Tariq took 4-16 and Basharat Raja 3-16.  In the Roddy MacLeod Conference Clydesdale's Cavaliers side made the short journey to Nether Pollok and returned home with the full points courtesy of a 6 wicket victory.  Whiteinch were dismissed for just 101 in 32.2 overs.  Steven Bond top scored with 20 and opening bowler Lucky Singh returned figures of 6-25, ending with 4 wickets off his last 8 legal deliveries.  Cavaliers ground the runs out in 35.1 overs.  Enayatullah Nasir and Bilal Bashir took two wickets each.

Sunday, July 24, 2011

This was a good weekend for Victoria as three comfortable victories were recorded by their various XI's in three different competitions.  The 1st XI posted a 9 wicket victory over Alps at Springburn Park on Saturday in the Tom Kerr Conference.  Alps were restricted to 173-9 in their full 50 overs, with Aamir Azeem being the pick of the bowlers with 3-26.  Victoria knocked the runs off for the loss of just Sajin Jose for 72 (11 fours).  He and Basharat Raja shared an opening stand of 156 before being parted.  Raja finished with 82 not out, hitting 9 fours and 3 sixes.  Whiteinch, meanwhile, coasted to an 8 wicket victory at Gatehouse of Fleet in the Roddy MacLeod Conference.  Mohammad Asif took 3-16 as the home side were dismissed for 120 in 33.2 overs, John Smith top scoring with 42.  Whiteinch raced to victory in 18.3 overs with openers Mohammad Asif Chaudhry and Rizwan Yousaf only being parted when Chaudhry retired hurt with 53 to his name (8 fours).  Yousaf made 57, with 7 fours and 2 sixes.  The final victory of the weekend saw West of Scotland comfortable defeated by 6 wickets in a Sunday League match at Hamilton Crescent.  West were all out for 113 in 31.2 overs.  Sivaramakrishnan Balasubramanian top scored with 27, whilst Aamir Azeem (for 14 runs) and Nasratullah Khan (for 34) each took 3 wickets. Victoria, after a slight wobble at 42-4, clinched victory just after 6 o'clock thanks, in the end, to an unbroken 5th wicket partnership of 73 in 13.4 overs between Munir Ahmed, who finished the match with a six to bring up his half-century (51no, 66 minutes, 66 balls) which also included 7 fours, and Sajin Jose (20 not out).  Young opening bowler Miro Ralston took 3-30 for the hosts.  One slight worry was an injury to Aamir Azeem, which contributed to his run out.  It comes a week before the Club's Small Clubs' Cup Final against Dollar/Ellon Gordon.

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Victoria booked their place in yet another Small Clubs' Cup Final by defeating Edinburgh side Morton by a comprehensive 107 runs at Nether Pollok today.  Vics, put in, recovered from a dreadful start (9 for 2 after 5 overs) to post 292-7 in their 45 overs, despite having to re-start their innings after two stoppages for heavy rain that totalled just over an hour.  Sajin Jose with 64, Munir Ahmed (32) and Aamir Azeem (52) all pitched in with important knocks but skipper Wasif Ghafoor was top scorer with 89. He struck 6 fours and 5 sixes off 64 balls in 77 minutes and shared stands of 79 with Jose and 76 with Aamir.  There were two wickets each for Vigneshwaran and Veera for Morton.  Morton's reply (after a shortened tea-break) never really got off the ground.  Wicket keeper Karthik top scored with 43 (3 x 4, 1 x 6, 83 mins., 51 balls) and Veera struck 2 mighty sixes in his 25, but that was about it.  The Edinburgh side's day was summed up when opener Sanah was dismissed with the first ball he faced after he returned to the crease having retired with an ankle injury in the 9th over.  Enayathullah Nasir took 3-39 and there were two wickets each for Bilal Bashir and Abdul Quddoos.  Victoria move on to their 5th final in 7 seasons, the match due to be played at Glasgow Academicals' ground on July 31.  Ellon Gordon or Dollar await....keep an eye on the website for more details!!

Saturday, July 2, 2011

Today was a day of agonising near-things for both of Victoria's Saturday XI's.  At Springburn Park, the Victoria XI lost by just 8 runs to Ardencaple.  After bowling the opposition out for just 129 the home side were dismissed for only 121, a situation made all the more frustrating by the fact Victoria were two men short.  Meanwhile, over at Nether Pollok, Whiteinch fell just short chasing Hamilton Palace's huge total of 275-6.  Opener Mohammad Asif hitting a magnificent 126, with 15 fours and 2 sixes, and shared a 2nd wicket partnership of 148 with Steven Bond.  At 194 for 1 in the 36th over Whiteinch were probably favourites but, despite some good hits late on from Qasim Murtza, who made 23,they were eventually dismissed for 265 with 3 balls remaining.

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Victoria made it 5 wins out of 6 in this season's Evening League competition with a comfortable 9 wicket win over Clyde at Glasgow Green tonight.  Clyde were dismissed for just 66 (Tariq taking 3-14) and Vics raced to victory for the loss of just one wicket, with skipper Abid Shuja hitting an unbeaten 54.

Thursday, May 12, 2011

Victoria tonight powered through to the 2nd round of the Glasgow Cup with a 75 run victory over Cavaliers at Glasgow Green.  Victoria totalled 202-4 (18 overs), thanks mainly to a fabulous 132 by skipper Abid Shuja.  Opening the innings, he struck 5 fours and no less than 14 sixes, the twelfth of which brought up his century.  He was assisted by Aamir Azeem (28) in a 111 run second wicket stand.  In reply Cavaliers scored 127-6.  Riaz top scored with 38 and there were two wickets for Aamir Azeem.

Bees, 14th May).  Watch this space!!!!

Saturday, April 30, 2011

The Club's excellent start to the season continued today with a winning start to the Tom Kerr Conference campaign.  An under strength Marress side were dismissed for just 53 in 18.3 overs at a sun-drenched Springburn Park.  Victoria knocked off the runs in just 11.3 overs for the loss of Mohammad Ahmad and Munir Ahmed.  Abid Shuja hit the winning runs with a six.......Shahbaz Hussain being the other not-out batsman.

Saturday, April 23, 2011

The Club's competitive season got underway with an exciting 6 run Roddy MacLeod Conference win over Windyedge at the Accies School Ground.  Whiteinch (put in) totalled 173 in 36.3 overs with Mohammad Asif Chaudhry top scoring with 63 (7 fours, 2 sixes) and Ian Gibson taking 3 for 25 for our opponents.  It seemed an odds-on Whiteinch victory during most of the hosts' reply, but a doughty 33 from their captain Jim McLaren almost helped to see them over the line.  In the end Whiteinch's new skipper Mohammad Ahmad took a fine one-handed catch to seal a nerve-jangling victory and 12 points for Victoria's second string.  Mohammad Asif took 3 for 29 as Windyedge were dismissed for 167 in 43.2 overs.  This match saw the comeback (literally in Victoria colours) of former Club Captain Tom Aitchison.  Tom made his 340th appearance for the Club, but his first since 2003.

Sunday, December 19, 2010

Allah Dita was presented with his award for top bowler in Division 3 of this season's WDCU competition at the Club's AGM tonight. Victoria completed a busy, but successful, season at Kilmarnock today by winning the Glasgow Cup for the 4th successive season.

Victoria posted a total of 149-9 in their 20 overs (Abid Shuja 37, Niamat Ali 18) and then restricted the home side, Kirkstyle, to 114-8 to win by 35 runs.  Nasratullah Khan took 4-25, Niamat Ali 2-23 and Allah Dita 2-29.

This was Victoria CC's 63rd match of the season.  The Club won the Small Clubs' Cup, WDCU Division 3, the Evening League Championship plus the Glasgow Cup.  In addition last year's Glasgow Cup was won as well as a Sixes tourney at Berwick last month.  A marvellous effort once again!

VICTORIA RETAIN THE GLASGOW CUP!!!

Victoria today retained the Glasgow Cup in the much-delayed 2009 Final v Cavaliers at Titwood (and so kept up their record of having won at least one trophy since 2000).

The match started at 1.30, ninety minutes late due to overnight rain, but Cavaliers, winning the toss, wasted no time in having their opponents on the ropes at 49-6.  Slowly, but surely, the Vics lower order dragged their team back in to the match as Allah Dita (25) and Shahbaz Hussain (18) firstly added 41 for the 7th wicket before Rashid Butt (13) and Mohammad Asif (25no) pushed the final total to 154 for 9 in the allotted 20 oversAsif actually struck an all-run four off the final delivery, scampering between the wickets as only he can.  Humza Sher and Arun Krishna took 3-31 and 3-34, respectively, for Cavaliers.

Cavaliers reply never really got going.  They never recovered from being 15-3, although Andrew Scobie played well for an unbeaten 45, batting at number four.  He hit 3 fours and one six.  Rashid Butt took 4-16 from his 5 overs.  The Clydesdale XI finished on 94-9 when the players walked off the ground just before 4.30.  The successful XI was: Niamat Ali (c), Basharat Raja, Wasif Ghafoor, Munir Ahmed, Abid Shuja (w), Nasratullah Khan, Shahbaz Hussain, Allah Dita, Rashid Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Wahid.

Victoria will be going for 4 Glasgow Cups in a row next Saturday when they play THIS year's Final v. Kirkstyle in Kilmarnock.  The match is schduled for a 12.30 start and is the last remaining fixture for Victoria in 2010.  Should it take place it will mean Victoria will have played 63 matches in a very hectic season.

Friday, September 10, 2010

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees the Final of the 2009 Glasgow Cup between Cavaliers and Victoria, at Titwood.  The 20-overs-a-side match is due to start at 12 noon.  Victoria CC are the defending champions and could make it 4 in a row next Saturday in THIS year's Final in Kilmarnock v. Kirkstyle.

Sunday, August 23, 2009

Today's Strathclyde League match at Clydesdale has been cancelled due to persistent rain.

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Victoria defeated Shawholm by 133 runs at Springburn Park today to keep their hopes of winning the WDCU Division 3 title alive.  There was some doubt as to whether the fixture would go ahead as, after a 10am ground inspection by both sides, agreement could not be reached on the fitness of the ground for play.  A decision was made to await the arrival of the official Western Union umpires and await their deliberations.

With a slight adjustment to the lower boundary markers the game, as expected, went ahead.  As remarked by the umpires later not a single player had any problems with their footing and absolutely no danger was presented to any of the participants.  With this decision Shawholm's Keith Young surprisingly declined to play in the match leaving his young side to take the field without him.

To the match itself.......Victoria, put in, posted an impressive total of 315 with the last wicket falling to the fourth ball of the 50th, and final, over.  The undoubted star of the innings was Sajin Jose who struck 174*, his third, and highest, century for Victoria.  He hit 16 fours and 9 sixes, many of them to the shortened boundary, admittedly, but it is true to say they would have cleared many a longer boundary.  Sajin did give possibly 3 or 4 'chances' very early in his knock but it was still an impressive innings.  He shared a fourth wicket stand of 134 in 24.1 overs with Niamat Ali, who scored 40.  'Billy' Chaudhry took 4-63 for the Poloc side.  Shawholm replied with 182 all out.  Jeremy King top scored with 56 and Coyle chipped in, from number 7, with 36 before being last out as Victoria clinched the win just after 7.30pm with almost 13 overs to spare.  Nasratullah Khan, continuing his recent fine bowling form, took 4-44.

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Victoria's quest to regain the Evening League championship has ended with news that Queen's Park, by defeating Strathclyde on Wednesday night, have retained their title.  Victoria had been champions for four successive seasons (2004-7) before Queen's Park beat us to it last year.  Congratulations to them.  With this news it has been confirmed that Vics' final match, scheduled to be played against Active Life, will not now take place.  Difficulties with booking grounds and failing light (along with the knowledge that the League can no longer be won) has made this decision inevitable.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Victoria returned to the cricket field tonight, after a (wet) weekend in which all three scheduled matches were postponed, with an Evening League win over the Biologists at Garscube.  Vics posted 113-3 (Abid Shuja 39, Niamat Ali 30*, Sajin Jose 21), to which Biologists replied with 59-6, resulting in a 54 run win for the visitors.

This leaves Victoria just 1 point behind leaders Queen's Park with both sides having one match to play.  Should Queen's Park win their last match (v. Strathclyde) then they will win the title.  Should they lose, however, or fail to play the fixture, Victoria will pinch the League by defeating Active Life in their final game (a match still to be arranged).  Remember to check here for details.

WHITEINCH WIN THE 2008 GLASGOW CUP

Since winning the semi-final last September, Whiteinch have had to wait almost a year to play this final. Disappointingly Amar Ullah, who should have captained the side, had work commitments, so Niamat Ali took his place. The weather was fine, but it had been a damp week. This affected the wicket, as we shall see. Niamat won the toss and decided to bat, and all went well for a few overs, the score getting past 40 for the loss of 1 wicket after six overs, Sajin Jose joint top scoring with 21. Then Albert Park introduced their spinners, slowing the scoring rate and producing a rapid fall of wickets, some to outstanding outfield catches. Over the next eight or so overs, 7 wickets fell for the addition of around 30 runs. Wasif steadied the tail with 21, but 92 all out in the 19th over didn’t look like a winning score. The only consolation was that Albert Park had to bat on the same wicket, and runs were not going to be easy to come by. And so it proved. The Whiteinch bowlers bowled accurately, while the fielders were like tigers, not allowing the batsmen any easy runs. Indeed, the score moved so slowly that soon 92 looked a tough score to reach. The batsmen became desperate, getting themselves out to poor shots or ill-judged runs. Gul Khan took 3 wickets, whilst Nasratullah and Sajin chipped in with 2 each. Indeed victory by 30 runs came in the 17th over with the third run out. A very happy bunch of players celebrated in the dressing room, pleased to have retained the cup, won against the same opponents in 2007. And so we look forward to the 2009 final. This was Victoria's 3rd Glasgow Cup success and 19th trophy win since (and including) the year 2000.

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Victoria have another final to look forward to following a 19 run win over Glenpark in the semi final of the Glasgow Cup at Glasgow Green tonight.

Vics posted 121-7 (Farzan 39, Abid 33) before restricting the visitors to 102-9 in reply. The good work was shared as Niamat, Hassan and Nasratullah each took two wickets. Look out for news of the date, opposition and venue for the Final. With an Evening League match (v. Biologists) scheduled for next Tuesday and the possibility of this week's postponed match against Active Life taking place next week the chances of this year's Final being played midweek would seem unlikely.

The big matches keep on coming for the Club as Thursday night takes us to Albert Park and LAST YEAR'S FINAL which was held over. Whiteinch are, of course, the holders of this trophy having triumphed by 8 wickets over the very same Albert Park at the same venue in September 2007. That match was memorable for a stunning innings of 98* by Aamir Azeem. Let's hope for good weather and a good match with worthy winners.

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Tonight's Evening League match against Active Life at Springburn Park has been postponed due to the heavy rain falling over Glasgow most of Tuesday. Watch out for details of the re-arranged date for this fixture.

Sunday, August 9, 2009

A mixed weekend for Vics as a win, draw and defeat were posted in various matches Sat/Sun. Sunday's Strathclyde League match at Shawholm was won (227 against 160), but the double-pronged attack on Western District Divisions 3 and 5 suffered twin setbacks (dependent also on results elsewhere). Whiteinch, Victoria's second string, went down to a 31 run defeat against Inverclyde at Hamilton Palace.

The First XI (in 3rd place in the league) posted an impressive 347-7 in their match against 3rd placed Langloan. Niamat Ali struck yet another century, this time scoring 130, whilst Sajin Jose (surely the batting find of Victoria's season) just missed out on his ton being dismissed for 98. Captain Wasif Ghafoor had scored a quickfire 46 before he had to retire hurt with a side injury, which restricted him to 12th man duties the following day. Langloan's young left opening bowler Darren Pryde took 3-75.

The home side made no attempt at the admittedly huge target, therefore possibly ruling themselves out of the running for the title. They ended up at 151-9 with South African-born Craig McDonald top scoring with 31 and Swapnil Patel taking 3-20 in an impressive spell. Victoria failed to separate the final pair, despite having the last half-dozen overs to do so. The 21 points gained in this match does improve Victoria's percentage slightly (to 80.9). Active Life went into this weekend's fixtures on 81.8%. There are now three matches to play.

NEXT UP: EL1 v. Active Life (Tue., Springburn Park (A))

Sunday, August 2, 2009

Victoria won today's 'home' Strathclyde League Division 2 encounter with Clydesdale at Titwood.

Victoria's score of 209 was enough for a 19 run victory, with Adid Shuja top scoring with 45 and seven wickets being shared between Farzan (4) and Pasha (3).

This midweek sees two important fixtures.  First up comes a home (Glasgow Green) Evening League fixture against Active Life followed, on Thursday, by the previously postponed Glasgow Cup quarter final versus Scotindians (this time at Springburn Park).

Saturday, August 1, 2009

Victoria's challenge for the Western District Cricket Union Division 3 title stayed on course with a comfortable 8 wicket win over St. Ninian's (Prestwick 2nd XI) at a showery Springburn Park today.

The visitors, put in, were dismissed for just 85 in 32.1 overs with Zahid taking 4-25.  Victoria's reply was then delayed by the rain which had forced the players from the field twice during St. Ninian's innings.

It did, however, stay off long enough for Victoria to race to victory in 8.1 overs for the loss of just Swapnil Patel (10) and Sajin Jose (34).  Skipper Wasif Ghafoor struck the winning four to finsh 28no.

Unfortunately Whiteinch lost their 5th Division encounter to Alps today, bringing to an end an unbeaten run stretching back to the opening day of the League season (April 25).

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Victoria's faltering Evening League campaign was given a boost tonight with a surprisingly comfortable eight wicket victory over Glasgow Academicals at Anniesland.

The home side were restricted to just 120-9 in their 20 overs after being 30-0 after just four.  Pasha took 4-24 and Swarn 4-25.  Victoria cruised to victory off the penultimate ball of the 18th over with Wasif Ghaffour hitting an unbeaten 74 and Niamat Ali 25.

Meanwhile, the previously postponed Glasgow Cup quarter final against Scotindians has been rearranged for next Thursday evening (August 6) at Springburn Park.

Sunday, July 26, 2009

Today's Strathclyde League Division 2 match against Queen's Park at Bothwell Policies in Uddingston has been called off due to rain.

Victoria's next scheduled match is this coming Thursday, an Evening League fixture against Glasgow Accies.  The Club is trying to rearrange last week's postponed Glasgow Cup match (v. Scotindians) for sometime this week too, so keep an eye out for news on here or contact any of the Club captains for news.

Sunday, July 19, 2009

Victoria pulled off an amazing last wicket Strathclyde League victory over old rivals Queen's Park at a showery Glasgow Green on Sunday.

Vics' restricted their opponents to 190-7 in their allotted 40 overs, the last six being completed after the first of three heavy showers forced an early tea.

At 119 for 6 Vics' looked dead and buried, but a brilliant knock of 96 not out by Sajin Jose pushed Victoria over the line.  Next highest scorer was Swarn with 15.  Sajin had just the perfect partner for the winning push, with Mohammad Asif flying and scurrying between the wickets as Victoria clinched victory in the second last over just after 8.30pm.

Saturday, July 18, 2009

Victoria's first eleven secured an important win on Saturday in their Division 3 match against Torrance House at Springburn Park.

The visitors, put in, were dismissed for a generally sedate 132 in exactly 48 overs.  Captain Nick Ralphs struck a few lusty blows in his top scoring innings of 48, whilst Zaheer took 4 for 36.

Victoria's reply was delayed whilst the first of three showers struck the area.  Twice in the first half dozen overs of Victoria's reply the players were forced from the field by further downpours.  It must be said that many teams would have been less keen to continue playing in such borderline conditions, so credit to the East Kilbride side for playing on.

The match was then played to a conclusion in pretty much the best weather of the match.  Openers Steven Bond and newcomer Swapnil Patel added 77 for the first wicket, Patel hitting 48 and veteran Bond 45 in a welcome return to form.  After a minor, but not unique, collapse Niamat Ali hit the winning run with 22 overs to spare, even 'though the clock had passed 8pm.

Friday, July 17, 2009

It has been a strange, and mixed, week for Victoria's various sides.

Last Saturday our first XI went down to a disappointing defeat to Scotindians on the new artificial wicket at Hamilton.  After dismissing their fifth-placed opponents for 130 Victoria would have been fairly confident of victory but, sadly, it wasn't to be.  In fairness it must be said that the Scotindian bowling attack performed excellently.

Down at Ardrossan, Victoria's second team (Whiteinch) strolled to an easy victory against Memorial Field in the glorious Ayrshire sunshine.  The home side were dismissed for just 91 with Whiteinch knocking the runs off for the loss of just skipper Amar Ullah (19) before tea was even taken.  Opener Shahbaz top scored with 37 not out.

There was no play on Sunday at Titwood where both sides assembled at the Clydesdale ground but were unable to get the match 'off the ground' due to rainfall at innoportune moments.

On Tuesday the rain which had threatened all day to disrupt, if not postpone, the away Evening League match against Biologists did indeed strike just after the start of the match, allowing less than 4 overs.  The fixture has been rearranged for August 18 and is the last scheduled evening match of the season.

The midweek side gladly returned to winning ways at Weirs' Albert Park ground on Thursday night.  Victoria have a pretty poor record at the south side venue so were delighted to come away with the 3 points which injected new life into their Evening League championship push.  Weirs (hosting the match despite being officially Victoria's home game) were restricted to 117-4 in their allotted 20 overs with club legend Craig Greenwood top scoring with 33.  Vics' edged to a 3 wicket victory in the penultimate over, Wasif Ghafoor hitting the winning runs to top score with 25 not out.

Monday July 6, 2009

It was a pretty good weekend for Victoria's various sides.

The First XI recorded a comfortable 7 wicket win over GHK/Strathclyde at Anniesland.  The home side were dismissed for just 83 inside 30 overs (three wickets for both Swarn and Wasif Ghafoor), after which Vics knocked the runs off in double quick time, the match finishing shortly after 3.30.  Sajin top scored with 31 and Basharat Raja rushed the match to a conclusion with a punishing 27* (finishing with a four and a six off consecutive balls).

Whiteinch were frustrated by the weather at the Ardencaple ground in Helensburgh.  They were dismissed for 230 in the 47th over and had the home side at 57-3 after 18 when the rain intervened for the 3rd, and final, time.  Therefore, the match finished 15 overs short of the minimum required for a result.

No such problems at Rothesay on Sunday afternoon as Vics' Sunday side recorded a 3 wicket victory in glorious weather in front of a larger than normal crowd!

Next up is Titwood for an Evening League match versus Clydesdale......hopefully Monday's showers relent and allow the match to take place.

Thursday June 25, 2009

Victoria recorded their 4th win in 5 Evening League Division 1 matches this season by defeating Glasgow Academicals by 31 runs at Glasgow Green tonight.

Vics posted an impressive 157 for 6, with Abid Shuja scoring 98 before being run out.  Niamat Ali chipped in with 36, then led the bowling honours with a return of 4 for 23 as Accies replied with 126 all out.

Sunday June 14, 2009

Victoria slipped to a disappointing 6 wicket defeat in Sunday's Strathclyde League fixture against Poloc.

Vics scored at over 6 an over, at one stage looking likely to top 300, but a late collapse from 198-5 to 208 all out ensured a harder match than it could have been.  Niamat Ali top scored with 63 (11 fours and a six) and Basharat Raja hit 55 (7 fours and 2 sixes).  Sajin Jose looked set for another big innings before he was dismissed by what appeared to be a dubious l.b.w. decision for 39.

Poloc were sitting at 27 for 2 but wayward bowling (a total of 34 wides) compromised Victoria's chances of winning and the Shawholm side's victory was completed in the 33rd over with, surprise, surprise.....a wide!

Saturday June 13, 2009

Victoria pulled off a surprisingly easy victory in Saturday's Division 3 fixture at Springburn Park as Kilmarnock (who, prior to the game, were sitting just 4 percentage points behind the home side) were defeated by 8 wickets with almost 20 overs to spare. The Ayrshire side, put in, scored steadily whilst losing wickets at regular intervals.  They finished with 238-8 in their 50 overs, with Niamat Ali taking 4-38.

Vics started poorly with the dismissals of Swarn and Quddoos, leaving them 15-2.  Incredibly no further wickets fell as Sajin and Niamat added an unbroken 229 for the 3rd wicket.  Sajin finished on 103 not out (his maiden Victoria century) and Niamat (who finished the match with a 6) scored an unbeaten 112.  It was his 12th Victoria century.  This capped a good couple of weeks for Victoria's top order batsmen at the Springburn ground, Farzan Dar having struck 104 not out last Saturday.

Meanwhile Whiteinch, Victoria's 2nd XI, had the better of a draw with Bees at Glasgow Green.

Sunday sees Victoria's Strathclyde League side (under the temporary captaincy of Niamat Ali) travel to Poloc's Shawholm ground.  This is officially Victoria's home match but Poloc have kindly allowed the fixture to take place on their ground.  Vics are looking to get off the mark in the League after defeat at Prestwick last month.

Thursday April 23, 2009

Tonight's scheduled friendly against Active Life has fallen victim to the rain which has hung around the Glasgow area most of the day.

Victoria's 2009 season got underway last weekend with a pair of friendly matches.  Victory at Falkland on Saturday was followed by defeat, to a strong Irvine side, on Sunday.

Details of both the friendly matches played so far and this coming weekend's opening competitive games will follow in due course.

Tuesday 6th May 2008

Victoria's weekend league season finally got off the ground at Ferguslie's Meikleriggs ground last Saturday.  Unfortunately the reigning Division 2 champions went down to a heavy defeat at the hands of the Paisley club's second eleven.

Meikleriggs posted an imposing 277 for 3 in their allocated overs, with stand-in skipper Sturgeon scoring 152 not out, giving just one chance (after he had reached his century).  This made for an inauspicious start for Victoria's new captain Munir Ahmed, although he did top score with exactly 50 in Victoria's total of 171 (40.4 overs).  Meikleriggs bowlers Docherty and Nye took 3 wickets each.

Whiteinch's Division 5 fixture against Rouken Glen at Hamilton was cancelled, due to the new strip at the Palace ground not yet being suitable for use.  Sunday's opening Strathclyde League match versus West of Scotland was postponed for the same reason.  Check this website, and in particular the fixtures page, for any re-arranged dates.

Wednesday 30th April 2008

Yesterday's friendly against the Biologists at Garscube was understandably cancelled due to heavy rain and thunderstorms in the early evening. Victoria and Whiteinch will try to start their league matches once and for all this weekend!

Monday 28th April 2008

Whiteinch's fist WDCU Division 5 match yesterday was cancelled due to bad ground conditions at Helensburgh CC.

Saturday 26th April 2008

Victoria's first WDCU Division 2 match was cancelled today. The match was due to have been against Shawholm, but this morning Poloc CC found their ground to be too waterlogged after rain during the night.

Friday 18th April 2008

The first cancelleation of the season is the first friendly against Westquarter & Redding who unfortunately have a waterlogged ground.

See the 2008 Fixtures page for the new list of fixtures.

Good luck in the coming season!

WHITEINCH WIN THE GLASGOW CUP!

This afternoon Victoria's 2nd team, Whiteinch, won the final of the evening competition - the Glasgow Cup. They beat Weirs CC 2nd team at Albert Park itself by 8 wickets. Well done to all everyone who took part in this tournament. Winning has been a great boost to the efforts of all club members who have been a part of our Whiteinch side this season especially Abdul Quddoos and Amar Ullah.

GLASGOW CUP - FINAL

The above match (v. Albert Park) has been arranged for this Sunday, 9th September. It will be played at Albert Park and will be the standard evening competition format of 20 overs per side.

Two changes from the original XI (see Wednesday 29th August below) have been announced. Manzar Aziz and Sabir Salar replace David Hogg and Shiraz Khalid (back injury).

The WDCU League season was concluded last Saturday with victory for the First Team at Prestwick and a draw for Whiteinch at Ardencaple. Basharat Raja's side finished the season with a fantastic 92% record, whilst Whiteinch clinched 4th place. Congratulations to both captains and well done to all players involved.

A promise made after our Small Clubs' Cup Final defeat last year was fulfilled on Sunday when we travelled to Stonehaven for a friendly against our conquerors Bon Accord. Unfortunately The Bons hold a 2-0 head-to-head record over The Vics as a result!!

The scores:

WDCU Division 2: Prestwick 227 (P. Stafford 75, Niamat Ali 4-53, Muhammad Asif Malik 3-55), Victoria 228-4 (Wasif Ghafoor 74*, Nehal Ahmed 43*, Niamat Ali 39).

WDCU Division 5: Whiteinch 245-8 (Imran Wasim 81, Abdul Quddoos 47, Mahsood Malik 33*, Anderson 3-53, Frew 3-77), Ardencaple 120-6 (Niven 54, Imran Waseem 3-45).

Friendly: Victoria 280-8 (Niamat Ali 53, Aamir Azeem 52, Adnan Haider 36, Zia Ul-Haq 35), Bon Accord 282-6 (N. Mirza 111*, A. Win 73, Ashutosh 46).

Please confirm your availability with Amar Ullah or Abdul Quddoos as soon as possible. Let's do the hat trick for the season and finish 2007 with a bang!

Sunday 26th August 2007

CHAMPIONS AGAIN!!

At 4.01 pm today Victoria clinched the Western District Cricket Union Division 2 title for the second successive season and, with it, their 16th trophy success since 2001.

Nearest challengers Helensburgh were defeated by 7 wickets in a one-sided match whose outcome, it must be said, relied a lot on the toss won by Basharat Raja. The accrual of only 2 points by Helensburgh may severely dent their promotion prospects, dependent on other results.

Niamat Ali bowled superbly, using the conditions to his full advantage. His figures of 7 for 31 in 12.2 overs were the second best analysis for the Club this season. The other three wickets fell to Thomas Mathew. Victoria's ground fielding was excellent throughout. Today, when it really mattered, the Glasgow side seemed 'up' for the game. Helensburgh's dismissal for 84 in only 24.2 overs meant that tea was delayed until the conclusion of the match. With Aamir Azeem (33) and Shiraz (27) sharing in a partnership of 65 in only 35 minutes (9.1 overs) Victoria rushed to victory in just 58 minutes (14.5 overs).

With one fixture to play (at Prestwick next Saturday) Vics' require 20 points (if the game is played) to attain a 90% record over the Division 2 season. Eight out of 10 games have been won, with only 1 lost. That, ironically, was to Helensburgh.

Victoria's 2nd XI, Whiteinch, also recorded a comfortable victory this weekend (Saturday). Crow Road were beaten by 108 runs at Anniesland. Wasif Ghafoor completed his 1000 runs for the season (the second player to do so this season, after Zia Ul-Haq) in the process of top scoring with 75.

The last meaningful match of the 2007 season is the Glasgow Cup Final against Albert Park. It is scheduled for the weekend of September 8/9. The exact date, location, starting time and format (number of overs) will be confirmed over the next few days or so. Please log on here for details and/or contact Abdul Quddoos and Amar Ullah.

Meanwhile why not check out new photos on the Pictures page. You can still of course go to the Contact Us page too and leave us any message or your thoughts on the finishing season!

Sunday 19th August 2007

Incessant rain, which fell over Glasgow for over 12 hours on Saturday, has caused the cancellation of today's Strathclyde League match against Glasgow University Staff at Garscube. This, unfortunately, ends any hope Vics' had of making the end of season Strathclyde Shield Final.

The attention switches next weekend to our bid to win the Western District Division Two title again. We travel to Ardencaple to take on our nearest challengers Helensburgh (Sunday 26th, 1 pm start).

Saturday 18th August 2007

Once again the weather has wreaked havoc on Vics' fixtures. Both today's Western District League matches were cancelled due to rain. This takes the total number of matches cancelled/postponed or abandoned (due to rain) to 21 in this dismal 'summer'.

Thursday 16th August 2007

HOT OFF THE PRESS!!

Whiteinch have won the semi-final of the Glasgow Cup against Paisley at Glasgow Green tonight by 1 run. After restricting their opponents to 94-5 in 16 overs Paisley were strong favourites, particularly as they found themselves extremely well placed at 67 for 4 after 10 overs, requiring just 28 in 6 overs to win. Amar Ullah's side never gave in and, just after 8.45pm in dismal light (the floodlights from the nearby football pitch shone brighter than the sun!), Paisley's last man was bowled with 6 balls left. 93 all out!! An opening stand of 67 in 9.1 overs between Niamat (27) and Wasif (49) formed the bulk of Whiteinch's total. Niamat took wickets with the second, and the last, ball of Paisley's reply.

Congratulations to the guys! The details of the Glasgow Cup Final will be posted as soon as we know them and if you hope to be a member of the team make your availability known to the Captain and Vice Captain Abdul Quddoos and Amar Ullah.

Wednesday 15th August 2007

CHAMPIONS!!!

Victoria were tonight celebrating their 4th successive Evening League Division 1 title success. The side, led by Steven Bond, finished in style with wins on successive nights against Strathclyde and Glasgow University Staff.

The scores: Tuesday v. Strathclyde (Victoria 131-3....Zia Haq Ul-59, Nehal Ahmed 45*, Strathclyde 99). Wednesday v. GU Staff (GU Staff 95-6....F. Johnstone 31, Victoria 96-6....Aamir Azeem 34*, Nehal Ahmed 29*).

The final playing record for the Evening League season was 11 wins and 3 defeats. To play 14 games in such a miserable season, weather-wise, says much for the Club's organisation. Special thanks are due to Club Chairman and Match Secretary Jon Barnes for arranging all the fixtures and also to the likes of Basharat Raja, Niamat Ali and Amar Ullah for captaincy/organisational efforts at various times over the course of the season. It also goes without saying that every single player who turned out during the season played their part also. Well done!!

The Club are still in the running for three other trophies. The next obstacle to those ambitions are the fine Paisley side, whom we welcome to Glasgow Green on Thursday evening for the semi final of the Glasgow Cup. Hopefully Wednesday evening's fine weather will continue and allow this long-anticipated match to be played. If you are not at the ground log on here tomorrow night for the result.

Monday 13th August 2007

The semi-final of the Glasgow Cup has now been arranged. The match, against Paisley, will take place this Thursday (August 16th) at Glasgow Green. Those interested in playing please contact Abdul Quddoos or Amar Ullah.

Our Sunday XI, captained by Wasif Ghafoor, fell to their first Strathclyde League defeat of the season yesterday against a strong Renfrew side at Glasgow Green. The scores: Renfrew 199 (32 overs) (Sikander 117), Victoria 108 (27) (Abdul Quddoos 28, Wasif Ghafoor 26).

Saturday 11th August 2007

For the 13th time this season a Victoria match has been cancelled (or postponed) without a ball being bowled. The match in question was our Division 2 match scheduled for Queen's Drive in Kilmarnock. In addition to those thirteen an additional five matches have been abandoned due to rain also.

A 14th match has been added to the list!! Sunday's Division 5 match at Hughenden has been called off due to a waterlogged ground. The Strathclyde League match v. Renfrew, scheduled for tomorrow at Glasgow Green, is still ON at the time of writing. Keep logging on here for updates.

Tuesday 7th August 2007

Victoria registered their 3rd Evening League victory in a week, defeating Whitehaugh at their Paisley ground tonight. The Vics restricted their opponents to 106-8 in their 18 overs and knocked the runs off with 14 balls to spare (Zia Ul-Haq 36*, Niamat Ali 35). Wins in both our remaining matches next week will clinch the Division 1 title for the 4th successive season.

Our Glasgow Cup midweek side still have an outstanding semi-final to play and our Saturday 1st XI (led by Basharat Raja) lead the Western Union 2nd Division, closely followed by Helensburgh. The match between the two sides at Ardencaple on the 26th of this month (the second last weekend of the league season) is shaping up to be a league decider.

So....still lots to play for as we move into the last month of the season. Stay in touch with all the exciting developments here at victoriacc.co.uk!!!

Sunday 5th August 2007

Persistent rain forced the cancellation of today's Strathclyde League match at Hamilton Crescent.

Saturday 4th August 2007

It was a successful day for both Victoria's sides today. The 1st XI defeated Moorcroft fairly comfortably in Renfrew whilst the 2nd XI (Whiteinch) defeated top-of-the-league Home Park by 5 wickets at Nether Pollok.

Zia Ul-Haq struck his 4th century of the season (105) as Victoria racked up over 300 runs in an innings for only the second time this season. Zia also has 8 fifties in addition to his hundreds. Last month Zia became the third player to score 1000 runs in two successive seasons. Munir Ahmed (2003/4) and Niamat Ali (2005/6) are the others. Thomas Mathew posted an unbeaten 98, just missing out on a maiden Vics century. With four weekends remaining Victoria still retain the leadership of WDCU Division 2.

Earlier this week Victoria's evening side recorded back-to-back victories on successive nights (against Clydesdale and Whitehaugh). Victories in all three remaining Evening League fixtures will guarantee Victoria's fourth successive Evening League title.

Wasif Ghafoor's Strathclyde League side travel to West of Scotland on Sunday (5th), whilst the only midweek game this coming week is at Whitehaugh's Paisley ground on Tuesday.

Tuesday 31st July 2007

Two more rearranged Evening League games have been added to our schedule for the future. We are away to Whitehaugh on Tuesday 7th August and play a home match at Garscube against GU Staff on Wednesday 15th August. See the fixture list for all up to date information.

Sunday 29th July 2007

Please note we have a re-arranged Evening League fixture this coming Wednesday (1st August). We take on Clydesdale at Titwood. Please indicate your availability to Midweek Captain Steven Bond.

This weekend's results: Victoria defeated Glasgow University Staff by 118 runs at Garscube (Zia Ul-Haq 67, Niamat Ali 5-12) and Whiteinch drew with Ardencaple (Abdul Quddoos 52, Manzar Aziz 5-16).

Thursday 26th July 2007

Well a mixture of results lately. On Saturday 21st July our 2nd XI (Whiteinch) lost to Hillend by 5 wickets (- in a match which in the end was played at Gourock Park). On Sunday 22nd July the 1st team (Victoria) won by 2 wickets against Glen Park. Tuesday 24th July's Evening League match against Strathclyde was won by 36 runs, but unfortunately tonight's Evening League match against Queens Park was lost by 8 wickets.

Remember to see up to date results anytime check the Fixtures / Results page where all results are entered first. Sometimes there's not enough time to give you a full report, but the fixtures table is definitely the first thing we update.

Also why not check the WDCU website to see how we're doing in the leagues. Just look under Senior Cricket. In the Western Union Victoria are currently leading Division 2 and Whiteinch are mid-table in Division 5. The Sunday/Strathclyde League is few weeks out of date so keep checking it, and the Evening League results this year havent been entered so far.

Wednesday 18th July 2007

Hi, writing this from my holidays in sunny London! Sorry not to have been at the recent matches but I hear everything has been going well. The 1st XI (Victoria) won Saturday's friendly in Meigle and Whiteinch also beat Scotindians at home on Glasgow Green. Sunday's match against Cambusdoon in Ayr was abandoned due to bad weather and we won last night's match against Biologists by 8 wickets.

This Saturday our 2nd XI (Whiteinch) play Hillend (Greenock CC's 3rd team) and on Sunday our 1st XI (Victoria) play Glen Park (Greenock CC's 2nd team). As you can see on our fixtures page both games are to be played down in Greenock (at Glen Park) but please note Sunday's game is technically our home game.

Well the technology here in the Internet Cafe in Kings Cross is great. Pity I dont have a ticket to Lord's tomorrow to see if England do well against India, but you never know I may get to visit the souvenir shop. Hope to see you all on Saturday.

- Steven Bond

Friday 13th July 2007

Details of this weekend's fixtures have been updated to show match locations. The friendly tomorrow against Meigle is at a ground called Victory Park on Ardler Road, Meigle near Blairgowrie - north of Dundee. The linked map is not precise, but takes you to Ardler Road. Also note that the 2nd XI (Whiteinch) match v Scotindians is at the familiar Glasgow Green.

Sunday 8th July 2007

PLEASE NOTE: There are 3 fixtures arranged for this coming midweek. As well as the scheduled Evening League match at Weirs on Thursday there are two other matches, both Cup ties. On Tuesday we travel to Paisley to take on Kelburne in the semi final of the Western Cup, whilst on Wednesday it's Hughenden (away) in a Glasgow Cup quarter final. The latter match is a Whiteinch (2nd XI) fixture. Please contact the relevant captains to indicate your availability.

Despite yesterday's sunny weather our 1st XI were without a match, due to the cancellation on Friday afternoon of Prestwick's visit to Glasgow. The recent excessive rain had rendered Glasgow Accies school ground unplayable.

Victoria 2nd XI, Whiteinch did play and, indeed, secured full points in a disappointingly one-sided match against Bees. The Clydesdale side totalled only 47 in 30.4 overs, with both Sohail and Manzar Aziz taking three wickets each. Whiteinch were 20 for 4 at one time, but a quickfire 25 not out (including two sixes, one of which concluded the match) from Adnan Haider hurried his side to victory well before 5 o'clock.

Sunday 1st July 2007

PLEASE NOTE: The game scheduled for this Tuesday 3rd July at Glasgow Green against Clydesdale WILL NOW TAKE PLACE. This has not been totally confirmed yet but please keep in contact with Midweek Captain, Steven Bond for more information or to state your availability.

ALSO NOTE: A provisional arrangement has been made for the next round of the Glasgow Cup to be played by Whiteinch (our 2nd XI) this Wednesday 4th July. Please keep in touch with Whiteinch for more details on this match and to state your availability to play then. Your help is appreciated, thanks!

------------------------

Both of yesterday's 1st & 2nd team matches in the WDCU leagues were abandoned due to rain. Less than 20 overs were played in each game before the weather closed in.

Today's Strathclyde League match v Paisley was abandoned after only 5 overs. Victoria were 17 for 1 when heavy rain, which until then had avoided Glasgow Green, forced the players to leave the field.

The one man out was Steven Bond, playing his 500th match for Vics dating back to 1987. Bond is only the 5th player to reach such a milestone, the record holder being Norman Drummond with 913 appearances (1974 - present).

Friday 29th June 2007

Well done to Victoria who won the WCDU Western Cup 2nd Round (Quarter Final) against Ferguslie on Wednesday 27th June. Look out for news of when the Semi Final will be.

The Evening League game on Thursday 28th was unfortunately posponed due to rain.

PLEASE NOTE: the game scheduled for this Tuesday 3rd July has been postponed due to Clydesdale having prior arrangements.

Have you noticed the Contact Us page now has a working guest book? If you have anything interesting to say / ask / comment on / announce or anything - then just click NEW ENTRY and fill out the form and then click SAVE ENTRY. This is open to Victoria members as well as anyone else visiting our site for instance friends, cricket fans, or opposition players etc. It would be nice to know what you like about the site or would like to see here, but why not tell us what you thought about Victoria performances or really anything Victoria related. Thanks!

Tuesday 26th June 2007

We start today with an apology to our Australian player David McGinniss. In our report on the Division 5 match at Hughenden on June 10th (News report, 13th) we stated he had scored an unbeaten 46 in Whiteinch's win. Unfortunately due to a poorly kept and, apparently, unchecked scorebook entry he was denied 5 runs. We are happy to put the record straight and congratulate him on his maiden Victoria 50!

I would ask all captains to ensure scorebooks are kept properly and taken seriously. We don't want players missing out on milestones.......one day it could be you!!!!!

Now to recent games...... On Sunday the 17th our Sunday XI, captained by Wasif Ghafoor, came out on top in the usual tight encounter at Glasgow Accies' New Anniesland ground. Chasing 194 to win Victoria squeezed through with 2 wickets to spare thanks mainly to the 'proverbial' captain's innings from Wasif. He finished with 68 not out.

Finally it was disappointing last weekend in the Western District. Our First XI went down by 18 runs in yet another tight game, this time against Helensburgh at a soggy Ardencaple on Saturday 23rd June. The home side, put in, were dismissed for 173 to the penultimate ball of the 50th over. Aamir Azeem returned figures of 4-27 whilst keeper Wasif Ghafoor secured 2 catches and a stumping.

Victoria started shakily and, at 46 for 4, things were looking decidedly shaky. It seemed the tide was turning as Zia Ul-Haq and Manzar Aziz added 65 for the 5th wicket. Unfortunately Manzar's dismissal was the prelude to an all too familiar Vics' collapse. Zia finished unbeaten on 78, taking his total of runs in his last 6 innings to 452 for only twice out. He struck 13 fours and 2 sixes.

Also on Saturday, Whiteinch (Victoria 2nd XI) were well on top against Crow Road (at Glasgow Green) before rain forced the abandonment of the match. More details to follow (providing the scorebook is in order, of course!!).

Sunday 24th's match v. Clydesdale, scheduled for Nether Pollok, was cancelled due to rain.

NOTE: there are TWO midweek matches this week. On Wednesday we travel to Paisley to take on Ferguslie in the Quarter Final of the Western Cup and, on Thursday, we host Glasgow University Staff in an Evening League match at Glasgow Green. If you are interested in playing in either fixture please contact the midweek captain.

Wednesday 13th June 2007

Firstly....a roundup of Sunday's fine division 5 win at Hughenden.

It didn't look good for Amar Ullah-led Whiteinch (Victoria's 2nd XI) as Hillhead Wanderers notched up 85 unbeaten runs in the first 25 overs of their innings. With a side bereft of experienced bowlers the portents didn't look good. Fortunately 17.3 overs later the West End side were dismissed for just 129. Alan Slater, a veteran of almost 800 games for Victoria (the last in 2003), top scored with 41.

Australian David McGinniss and Sabir Salar opened with 74 in just 12 overs. Sabir scored 43 (4 fours, 2 sixes) and McGinniss finished undefeated on 46 (including 6 boundaries), his best score yet in this, his debut season. Victoria clinched the win with almost 36 overs to spare.

On Monday evening, at a gloriously sunny but overgrassed Nether Pollok, Amar Ullah led his side to another win, this time in the Glasgow Cup. Glasgow Ansar (which, incidentally, stands for All Nations Sport And Recreation) were the hosts as the teams did battle for a quarter final place.

With boundaries particularly short on one half of the ground scoring was restricted almost entirely to singles, fours and sixes. An incredible 24 shots cleared the boundary markers.

Whiteinch totalled 181-7 with Aamir Azeem scoring 45, Wasif Ghafoor 44 and Manzar Aziz 30 (he and Aamir added 82 for the first wicket in 9.3 overs.

Glasgow Ansar replied with 153-9, Sajid top-scoring with 54 (7 fours, 3 sixes). Rashid Butt helped himself to 3 wickets, whilst Aamir clung onto a stupendous catch at deep point.

This Thursday Victoria's Evening League team swing back into action as they host Queen's Park at Glasgow Green. Can Vics' make it 6 wins on the trot?

Sunday 10th June 2007

A good Sabbath for Victoria as both Western District sides recorded wins.

The first team had to travel to Kilmarnock for their 'home' game, but came away with full points.

Kilmarnock, put in, recovered from the loss of two early wickets to consolidate steadily. At 71 for 3 after 25 overs the stage was set for Pasha. He struck 72 not out as Kilmarnock almost trebled their score in the second half of their innings.

Set 213 to win Victoria were unlikely winners as they found themselves 18 for 3 early on as Aamir Azeem (9), Niamat Ali (0) and Bond (6) all found themselves back in the pavilion.

Then the incredible Zia Ul-Haq, in partnership with Wasif Ghafoor, turned the match on it's head. Zia struck his second unbeaten century in a week. He followed his 102 not out at Drumpellier on Wednesday with 109 undefeated runs. Wasif scored 76 not out as their stand amassed 195 runs without being parted. Victory was clinched just after 7.40pm with just under 5 overs to spare.

Whiteinch (Victoria's 2nd XI) also won, this time at Hughenden against Hillhead Wanderers. Watch out for details of that match coming soon!

There are two matches for Vics' this coming week. Monday night sees Glasgow Cup action as Whiteinch take on Glasgow Ansar at Nether Pollok and Thursday brings Queen's Park to Glasgow Green in a League match. Any players interested in playing in either match please contact Amar Ullah and/or Steven Bond.

Friday 8th June 2007

Please note that the second round tie in the Glasgow Cup has been arranged for this Monday 11th June against Glasgow Ansar at Nether Pollok and details are on the fixtures page. We are currently now up to date with new fixtures and rearranged matches which had been postponed but if you need details for any matches that we may not be able to list quickly enough in the future (as we progress in various competitions and when some games are rained off) - then do contact your captain or Steven or Jon for further information.

Thanks for those who have sent us photographs for the pictures page. We are adding more pictures all the time so keep checking there! If you have any more cricket / Victoria related photos then feel free to email them to the Webmaster or to Steven and we'll get them online.

Thursday 7th June 2007

Two outstanding pieces of batting by Zia Haq inspired Victoria to victories on successive nights in two different competitions.

Firstly he struck 74 (batting at 5) in a commanding total of 216-4 in the Evening League match against Biologists on Tuesday evening. This knock included just 3 fours, but an incredible 8 sixes. Niamat Ali compiled 45 unbeated runs in typical fashion. Biologists could muster only 101-7 in reply.

If Zia's Tuesday innings was impressive he managed to surpass it on Wednesday in beautiful sunny and warm conditions against Drumpellier in Coatbridge in a Western Cup first round tie. He scored an undefeated 102 in an eventual Vics' score of 159-6. Whilst he was at the wicket 6 other batsmen scored 33 runs between them. His century included 9 fours and 6 sixes, 5 of which came after he had reached 59.

Drumpellier, in reply, never looked likely to succeed in chasing their target, but an unbroken partnership of 67 for the fifth wicket between youngsters Stewart and the impressive Allison (36 no) gave cause for optimism for the Lanarkshire Club.

Monday 28th May 2007

Victoria's delight in defeating Glasgow University Staff at Garscube on Saturday was tempered by a chastening defeat in the Small Clubs' Cup at Ardencaple on Sunday. A well-drilled and motivated Helensburgh side overcame a Vics XI who produced an irresponsible batting performance when patience and conviction was required.

At 54-1 (chasing 160 in 45 overs), Victoria should have been in a position to coast to victory with a line-up which, on paper, batted to number 11. Unfortunately cricket is played on grass!!

The day wasn't without it's bad luck, however. Zia Ul-Haq was run out without facing a ball and Javed Iqbal was on the end of a a dubious l.b.w. decision but otherwise poor shots were to blame for the Glasgow club's demise.

Elegant batting from Bowers, the young South African wicket keeper/batsman, fine hitting from Raju in the middle order and patient accumulation from Captain Lang saw Helensburgh to a competitive, though hardly daunting, 159. Aside from Wasif Ghafoor (31), Rashid Butt (24) and Niamat Ali (21), 8 other batsmen contributed the princely sum of 9 runs between them in a sorry display. Teenager Duncan Stevens took 6-33 for Helensburgh.

This took a lot of the gloss off a fine WCDU Division 2 result on Saturday at Garscube.

The scores: Glasgow University Staff 133 - 8, Victoria 134 - 8.

The highlights: 40 from Zia Haq, 36 from Wasif Ghafoor and 4-21 for Muhammad Asif Malik.

REMEMBER: This Thursday is the deadline for payment of subscriptions for 2007. For details see item 4b in the Club Constitution which you can find in the Rules section if this website.

If you need any more information or need to ask any questions please contact Steven Bond, Jon Barnes, Norrie Drummond or any of the captains. Thanks.

Saturday 26th May 2007

On the Fixtures/Results page there have been a few changes.

The unplayed match organised against West Of Scotland on 6th May has been cancelled, as has the match recently scheduled against Ayr on 20th May. Both of these Sunday League matches are unfortunately unable to be re-scheduled.

Also note that the club constitution has been added to the Rules page. This will be helpful especially to new members of Victoria or those wanting to brush up on particular regulations.

Wednesday 23rd May 2007

After a blank weekend when all three of the Clubs' fixtures fell victim to either persistent rain or unfit grounds, Victoria returned to the field yesterday with a second successive Evening League victory, this time at Clydesdale's Titwood ground.

Clydesdale, batting first, looked set for a more than decent score, passing 60 in the first 10 overs, but excellent 'death' bowling by both Abdul Sattar (on his bowling debut) and Aamir Azeem restricted the southside club to just 110 for 6 in their alloted 20 overs.

Victoria's reply was uncompromising. Niamat Ali, Nehal and Aamir Azeem struck 14 fours and 2 sixes between them to speed Vics' to victory in just 14 overs. Aamir (who completed a fine 50 just before the finish) and Nehal's unbroken partnership of 54 was compiled in just 4.4 overs. Aamir straight-drove Munro for the winning runs to finish 54 not out.

Shortly after the match Niamat Ali was belatedly presented with his 2006 Victoria CC bowling trophy by Club Chairman Jon Barnes.

Friday 19th May 2007

Victoria finally notched their first evening victory of the season in defeating Glasgow University Staff by 6 runs in an excellent match at a mostly dank, damp Garscube on Thursday 18th.

A competitive score of 136-7 was posted mainly thanks to an innings of 62 by Nehal. In GU Staff's reply the early capture of the crucial wicket of the classy Paul Bartlett gave Vics a timely boost.

Only for an over or two towards the end of the innings did a Victoria reversal look likely and, thanks to tidy bowling spells from Niamat Ali, Javed Iqbal and Basharat Raja the 3 points were secured.

Other news is for everyone to note that the opponents on May 27th in the Small Clubs Cup 2nd Round will be Helensburgh in an away match.

Monday 14th May

It was very much a mixed weekend for Victoria's various sides. Our Sunday XI, captained by Wasif Ghafoor, achieved a comfortable 5 wicket win over Clydesdale at Titwood in the Strathclyde League 1st Division but Saturday's two fixture didn't quite go according to plan.

Our Whiteinch (2nd) XI lost by 28 runs to the new (to the WDCU) Scotindians side at a gloomy Hamilton Palace. After reducing the visitors to 24 for 5, Whiteinch were disappointed to see the Indian side total 127. Having said that, Victoria were cruising along comfortably at 43 for 1 before the rot set in. Taju's magnificent return of 6-26 sent Whiteinch spinning for just 99.

The above match was played without incident. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said of the 1st XI's fixture against Cambusdoon at the Glasgow Accies School Ground.

A couple of contentious decisions, involving a boundary catch and a run out, resulted in an impasse whereby Victoria's players remained on the ground whilst Cambusdoon's retreated to the dressing rooms and then home!

We may not have heard the last of this one. Watch this space........

A note for all those going to be at the match this Wednesday 16th May against Drumpellier at Langloan: there will be a short team meeting after the game for Victoria club members. Please hang around for just a short time when the match is finished. Thanks!

New to Fixtures / Results page:

Most of the grounds locations now have links to maps or directions;

And this Wednesday's Glasgow Cup match - 2nd XI (Whiteinch) v Langloan in Coatbridge has been added into the fixtures list. If we are successful then future Glasgow Cup matches will be added when they are known.

There was much confusion yesterday about the ground at Brancomhall being unplayable and the match against West Of Scotland having to be postponed. Appologies to everyone concerned. The matter will be investigated by the match secretary and Jon will also arrange a new date for this fixture. New dates will be communicated as soon as possible.

Saturday 5th May 2007

Welcome to the site!

From now on members, players and opposition clubs can use the Victoria CC website for their first stop on information about the club.

Recently added: Fixtures / Results List

This tells the important fixtures dates and locations for Victoria CC players and for members of the opposition. There are often links to maps or directions of the locations where matches will be played, but more are being added all the time. Now no one will have an excuse not to be prepared for where they are going!

Please keep checking the Fixtures page for any additions or changes to dates or places. We will also add in the results if matches as soon as we can so our progress can be followed.

Work is being done regularly on the rest of the site too. The Personnel page will be getting photos so new members or other clubs can tell who is who. The Pictures page too has a budding photo album. More pictures will be added soon, but if you have any Victoria CC related photos past or present then send them to the webmaster. The Contact Us page will be updated soon also, for any feedback you may wish to send as well as material for the site.

Thursday, August 13, 2009WHITEINCH WIN THE 2008 GLASGOW CUPSince winning the semi-final last September, Whiteinch have had to wait almost a year to play this final. Gul Khan took 3 wickets, whilst Sohail and Sajin chipped in with 2 each. Indeed victory by 30 runs came in the 17th over with the third run out. A very happy bunch of players celebrated in the dressing room, pleased to have retained the cup, won against the same opponents in 2007. And so we look forward to the 2009 final.  This was Victoria's 3rd Glasgow Cup success and 19th trophy win since (and including) the year 2000.Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Victoria have another final to look forward to following a 19 run win over Glenpark in the semi final of the Glasgow Cup at Glasgow Green tonight.
